The insight
The pivot was in the wrong place.
David Sr. is a mechanical engineer. He spent his career on rotating systems, and he looked at the board he had been handed and saw an arrangement no engineer would have chosen. The axis of rotation sat on the floor, several inches below the joint it was supposed to be training.
The first prototype was plywood and a hinge, built to test whether moving the axis to the top surface changed anything. It did.
