Origin

It started with a broken ankle and the wrong tool.

David Shoffler Sr. broke his ankle. Michael Suk repaired it.

The surgery went the way it should have. The recovery did not. Weeks into rehabilitation the standard equipment was making things worse rather than better. The wobble board slid out from under him on every repetition, and each time he caught himself the force travelled up the leg and settled in his lower back.

He was doing the exercises correctly. The equipment was the problem.

First prototype, plywood and a hinge

The insight

The pivot was in the wrong place.

David Sr. is a mechanical engineer. He spent his career on rotating systems, and he looked at the board he had been handed and saw an arrangement no engineer would have chosen. The axis of rotation sat on the floor, several inches below the joint it was supposed to be training.

The first prototype was plywood and a hinge, built to test whether moving the axis to the top surface changed anything. It did.
